KIRKWOOD ROLLS OVER WEBSTER 49-7

KIRKWOOD — The stage was set for the 100th anniversary of the Turkey Day game to be special.

Red, white and blue bunting hung from the fences. Webster Groves coach Cliff Ice wore a crisp white shirt and burnt orange tie under his checkered overcoat. Players from both sides donned bulky throwback uniforms from the 1950s. And many fans wore special hats and shirts commemorating the event.

There was lots of pomp, and under these circumstances — commemorating what started a century ago — it all seemed appropriate.

Unfortunately, the 9,000 or so fans congregating Thursday afternoon did not see much of a football game, as Kirkwood won 49-7, its first Turkey Day victory over Webster Groves since 2004. The Statesmen lead the series 49-39, with five ties.

With turkeys to be basted and family and friends to visit, the majority of fans did not stick around to the end. But those who did stay saw the Kirkwood players rush to get the Frisco Bell, bring it to their sideline and ring it repeatedly.

And if the fans looked carefully, they might have even seen senior receiver Dello Davis standing on top of it. He liked touching it, and he did so repeatedly.
